Diver.city Inside-Out

A celebration of diversity and multiculturalism on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland.

At a time when physical restrictions to connect with one’s place of birth are imposed by the COVID-19 outbreak, fifty local migrants were invited to share their experiences of arriving in Australia & the Sunshine Coast and of being torn between two cultures.

Their stories of joy and challenge were celebrated with an independently organised Group Action as part of the world-renowned Inside Out Project, which involved a Diver.city March (parade down Coolum Boardwalk) and a large outdoor portrait exhibition that took place at Tickle Park, in Coolum Beach, on 28 August 2021.

Our aim was to hear the local voices for whom English is not their first language, raise awareness of the kaleidoscope of cultures that make up our society and create a portrait of the Sunshine Coast as a multicultural community.

This project shared with the world how important multiculturalism is to the Sunshine Coast. Whatever our cultural background, we shape our culture with acceptance and harmony. This group action also connected local artists and people from different cultural backgrounds to celebrate cultural diversity, inspired contemporary cultural reflection and had a worldwide reach.
