Principles of Biomechanics

During this physical theatre workshop, we will investigate the principles of Biomechanics, a system of physical techniques created by Russian actor and director Vsevolod Meyerhold (1874-1940). These intricate movement practices explore in-depth the mechanical and organic aspects of theatrical play, which enable the actor to focus his awareness on each gesture produced on the stage.

D.I.V.E. Theatre Collective’s Principles of Biomechanics workshop includes a practical overview of Meyerhold’s études: physical training exercises to fine-tune the body and discipline the actor’s actions, reactions, impulses and responses on the stage. This psychophysical approach to performance aims at developing basic skills such as rhythm, precision, balance, playfulness, harmony, coordination, responsiveness, confidence and expressiveness.

The workshop is led by D.I.V.E. Theatre Collective’s Artistic Director Cesar Genaro, born and trained in Brazil, having used and disseminated Meyerhold’s techniques throughout his career as an actor and director.
